Battery backup and off-grid power near Byron Bay

Battery backup power near Byron Bay: which batteries run during a blackout, backup circuits, off-grid systems for hinterland homes, accreditation and costs.

Battery backup near Byron Bay means a home battery, inverter and wiring set up so that chosen circuits keep running when the grid goes down. Not every battery installation does this: it depends on the inverter, the switching gear and how the backup circuits are wired, so it has to be asked for and designed in. For properties that are not connected to the grid at all, a stand-alone power system is a separate design job with its own accreditation class. Independent accredited providers design, quote and install these systems, and this website does no more than pass on your details.

Who looks at backup or off-grid power?

Byron Shire runs from the coastal towns into rural land. The shire’s economic profile describes urban areas concentrated along the coast, with rural-residential areas in the hinterland, including the small townships of Bangalow, Ewingsdale and Mullumbimby, and rural land used largely for agriculture. Homes out on acreage at the end of a long private line, or on blocks where bringing the grid in is expensive, are the usual candidates for off-grid systems. Town homes more often want backup for the fridge, lights, internet and a water pump.

Reasons people enquire:

  • Outages have left the household without water because the pressure pump or bore pump stopped.
  • Someone in the house relies on powered medical equipment.
  • A home business or remote work needs internet and a computer to stay up.
  • The property is a new build on rural land and the grid connection quote is high.
  • An existing off-grid system is ageing and the battery bank needs replacing.

The Bangalow area page and the Mullumbimby area page cover those parts of the shire.

Does a home battery keep the power on in a blackout?

Only if it is set up to. Many grid-connected batteries are installed mainly to store daytime solar for use in the evening. Whether the same battery can also supply the house when the grid fails depends on the inverter’s backup capability, an automatic changeover arrangement, and which circuits are wired to the backup side. Ask the installer three direct questions before you sign:

  1. Will this battery and inverter supply power during a grid outage?
  2. Which circuits will be backed up, and which will go off?
  3. How quickly does the changeover happen, and will anything need resetting?

Get the answers written into the quote, so there is no doubt later about what the battery was sold to do when the grid drops out.

Options compared

Option What it does What to weigh
Grid-connected battery, no backup Stores solar for later use; goes off with the grid Lowest complexity; no blackout protection
Grid-connected battery with essential-circuit backup Keeps selected circuits running in an outage Needs a backup-capable inverter and switchboard changes; choose circuits carefully
Grid-connected battery with whole-home backup Attempts to run the whole house in an outage Needs a larger inverter and battery; heavy loads can drain it quickly
Stand-alone power system Solar, battery and usually a generator, with no grid connection Full design for year-round demand, including wet runs of cloudy days
Generator only Fuel-driven backup through a changeover switch Noise, fuel storage and servicing; no solar savings

Accreditation for backup and stand-alone systems

Solar Accreditation Australia lists three accreditation classes: grid connected solar photovoltaic systems, grid connected battery storage, and stand-alone power systems, each available as design only, install only or design and install. For an installation accreditation, SAA asks for the person’s electrical licence number, a working safely at heights certificate and a public liability certificate of currency. Accreditation is held by individuals, so ask which accredited person will design and which will install your system, and check that the stand-alone class is covered if you are going off grid.

Battery installations must meet AS/NZS 5139, and all of the wiring is electrical work that needs a NSW electrical licence. For a grid-connected battery, the installer also lodges an application with Essential Energy before fitting it, describing the battery chemistry and size, how it ties into the switchboard, and which inverter runs it.

Can an off-grid battery get the federal discount?

Sometimes. The Clean Energy Regulator’s battery rules say an off-grid battery must be installed on a dwelling that is lived in, so sheds and bore pumps on their own do not qualify, and only one battery per off-grid dwelling can claim. Properties more than 1 km from the grid do not need a battery that can join a virtual power plant. Properties less than 1 km from the grid must either have a system capable of joining one, or provide written evidence that connecting to the main grid would cost more than the threshold the regulator sets. For the general discount rules, see the Cheaper Home Batteries Program guide, and ask the installer to state the discount in the quote.

What a careful designer works out first

A backup or off-grid design starts with what has to run, for how long. A careful designer will:

  • list the appliances you need during an outage or year-round, with their running power and hours of use;
  • separate heavy loads such as ovens, kettles, air conditioners and pool pumps from the essentials;
  • check where the switchboard is and whether it has room for backup circuits;
  • for off-grid, plan for several days of low sun in the wet months, and size any generator to recharge the battery;
  • explain how the system behaves when the battery is low, and what you need to do;
  • refuse to back up circuits that the battery and inverter cannot carry safely.

If you want a provider to work through that list with you, send a backup power enquiry with the appliances you care about.

How much does battery backup cost?

The battery bands below are national averages from the Solar Choice battery price index, covering battery only through to battery plus inverter, including installation, GST and the federal discount. They are not a Byron Bay quote, and backup wiring, switchboard work or an off-grid design will add to them.

Battery size, usable National average band
10 kWh $7,784 to $8,284 per system
20 kWh $14,972 to $15,772 per system

A stand-alone power system is priced from the full design: panels, battery, inverter, generator, cabling across the property and any shed or enclosure. Expect a site visit before any firm figure. The home battery installation page covers choosing a battery for a grid-connected home in more depth.

How the work usually goes

  1. You describe what needs to run in an outage, or the property’s year-round needs for off-grid.
  2. The provider visits, checks the switchboard, roof or ground space for panels, and where the battery and inverter can safely go.
  3. The design and quote list each component, the backed-up circuits and any generator.
  4. For a grid-connected system, the connection application goes to Essential Energy before installation.
  5. The system is installed, tested and commissioned, and the electrician lodges the compliance certificate.
  6. The provider shows you how the system behaves in an outage and what the alarms mean.

Next step: list what has to keep running

Put these in your enquiry:

  • the appliances that must run in a blackout, such as the fridge, a water pump, medical equipment or internet;
  • whether the property is on the grid, and if not, roughly how far the nearest power line is;
  • the property’s suburb or locality and the type of land;
  • any existing solar, battery or generator, with photos of the labels;
  • photos of the switchboard and where the battery could go.

Ask about backup or off-grid power with that list, and the provider can tell you whether a grid-connected battery with backup or a stand-alone system fits your property.

Frequently asked questions

How long will a battery run my house in a blackout?

It depends on the battery's usable capacity, how much charge it holds when the outage starts and what is switched on. A fridge, lights and internet draw far less than an oven, kettle or air conditioner. Ask the designer to estimate hours of backup for the circuits you choose, at a realistic starting charge.

Can I add backup to a battery I already have?

Sometimes. It depends on whether the existing inverter supports backup and whether the switchboard can be rearranged to separate the backed-up circuits. Send the inverter and battery model numbers so a provider can check before visiting.

Do I still need a generator with an off-grid system?

Most off-grid designs include one to cover runs of cloudy days and to protect the battery from being drained too far. A designer may size the system so the generator rarely runs, but going without one means a much larger battery and panel array.

Is it cheaper to connect to the grid or go off grid?

That depends on the distance to the nearest line, the terrain and what Essential Energy or an accredited service provider quotes for the connection, against the cost of a stand-alone design. Get both figures in writing before deciding. The battery discount rules also treat properties within 1 km of the grid differently.

Will backup keep my water pump running?

It can, if the pump's circuit is on the backup side and the inverter can handle its starting current. Pumps draw a surge when they start, so tell the designer the pump model and whether it runs a pressure system, a bore or a tank transfer.
